The flowers are 1½ inches across, colored in creamy white with dark purplish red speckles. The leaves have creamy centers surrounded in green, about two inches long. A plant will bloom for many weeks during the later part of summer into autumn. To grow well it needs a humusy, moisture retentive soil and filtered light during the hottest part of the afternoon. The exotic looking flowers are often described as being orchid-like. With a habit that is upright and branching, its height is 18 to 24 inches. And it grows well without support. Occasionally a shoot with solidly green leaves will come along, and is easily nipped out. Native to Asia, a common name for it is toad lily. USDA Zones 5 - 9. |
