The proprietor of Seedhunt, Ginny Hunt, graciously provided several plants of 'Cool Knip' to us a few years back, a plant that she selected and named. Click here to visit Seedhunt's website, offering seeds of California wildflowers by mail-order. 'Cool Knip' is similar in coloring to the torch lily named 'Ice Queen' which has large creamy white and greenish flowers. And though 'Ice Queen' is large, 'Cool Knip' is even larger and taller. Height of 3 to 4+ feet. 'Cool Knip's' flowering season is in summer in most climates, although it blooms for us in fall because of our cooler, maritime climate. It does not grow into a thick clump of shoots nearly as readily as most Kniphofias. So although we have been growing it since 2009 we have only a few plants to offer. And will be limited to one per customer, please. This plant survives well to USDA Zone 6, as reported by Seneca Hill Perennials, located in Oswego, New York.

Here is a link to a page that has a short video on the website of Louis the Plant Geek, that illustrates one way to protect Kniphofias over winter.

We don't agree with his opinion of torch lilies with hot colors. And if you take the time to read to the bottom of the text on his webpage, you will notice that the way he pronounces the name of Kniphofia in the text does not match the way it is spoken in the video. Any way you call it is fine by us. (Just as long as you don't call it late for dinner.)
