  • Special characteristics: large flowers of lavender, bloom throughout the summer
The large lavender flowers are about 2 inches long, in the typical shape of impatiens that roughly resembles a cornucopia -- opening wide at its mouth and with a short, curved tail at the opposite end. They are not held above the plant but at its outer edges. This impatiens does not sprout in spring into new growth as early as other plants, so be patient. In warmer climates this starts blooming in late spring and continues through fall. In cooler climates it will bloom non-stop from summer until early autumn. The plant's habit is open and spreading, and can be found happily mingling with its nearest neighbors. It will easily grow 3 to 4 feet wide and 2 feet high in a season. Grows very happily in dry shade. Native to western China, Nepal and Tibet. Will survive to USDA Zone 7.
