  • common names: trailing fuchsia
  • flowering season: summer to fall; has a long season of bloom when grown in a container
  • height: young plants will be very low trailing; with age the stems become woody and the plant will better support itself to grow taller, potentially reaching several feet in every direction
  • Light requirements: filtered light; partial shade
  • Soil requirements: average
  • Water requirments: average, meaning watered regularly but allowed to dry out between waterings
  • Growth habit: growing wider rather than tall
  • How to propagate: tip cuttings from spring to fall
  • Leaf type: oval leaves under an inch in diameter, painted in cream and green
  • Ways to use it: with protection it will survive outdoors in mild climates; will grow happily for many years in a small or large pot
  • Other points of interests: easily pruned throughout the year; if you want to cut it back drastically, don't do it all at once or the plant may die from the shock -- leave a few of the branches uncut until you see signs of new growth on the branches that you do cut
This is a very curious little plant, a low growing and prostrate shrub from New Zealand, that doesn't look much like a typical fuschia. The leaves are small, rounded and irregularly mixed with cream, pink and green. The flowers are upright, not drooping as is usually seen, and are colored amazingly in yellow and purplish-red, with blue pollen. Established roots are hardy to 10°F. Plants that are frozen above ground may regrow from underground if the plant has established itself over several years. Flowers from June to October. This fuchsia can be planted singly in its own pot or mixed with other plants in a large container, in either case it will trail over the edge. Planted in the ground inside a greenhouse I have seen it grow large, several feet in every direction, and clambering up and through its neighbors.
