Growing as a clump to eighteen inches tall, this needs partial shade and soil that will not dry out too much. It is related to hydrangeas, although it doesn't grow as a shrub but sprouts from the ground each spring with large, broad and textured leaves of green. In July and August flowers of light lavender appear at about the same height as the leaves. Its flowering season is long, with new buds opening in succession. Each flower is between an inch and two inches across and faces outwards or nods slightly downwards. It is native to woodlands in China. Hardy to −5°F. |
