  • height: 30 feet or more in time

  • Water requirments: undemanding
  • Growth habit: a quickly growing vine
  • How to propagate: from seed
  • Leaf type: five-part leaves, each leaflet about 2 inches long
  • Ways to use it such as in a pot or otherwise: will grow along the top of a fence, up a trellis or draping the side of a building
  • Special characteristics: flowers on the current year's growth so that cutting it back to the ground in winter will not lessen its flowering the following year
Growing wild over a large portion of the West, this grows very large if allowed. It has a large mass of small, fragrant flowers during the latter part of summer. In our garden its flowering season is quite long. Once established it thrives with only the water Mother Nature provides, even in our typically dry, western summers. It is deciduous. Many seeds are produced by autumn which will be blown throughout your garden during winter gales, and sprout prodigously the following spring, so cutting the seedheads off in fall is recommended. In late winter or in early spring the plant can be pruned back as much as you want without harming it. Flowers on the current year's growth. Hardy to -30°F.
