Tropaeolum tricolorum

Tropaeolum tricolorum

This is a perennial vine, and begins its yearly growing cycle at the end of summer, growing larger throughout fall and winter, and then flowering as the first hints of spring arrive. By summer it becomes dormant. We grow it in terra cotta pots in a greenhouse although it can take a frost when grown in the ground in a sheltered location. The pictures of it here were taken February the 8th of 2010. The flowers that are shown are only the first ones of the season. Many more are in tight bud and will open in the weeks to follow.
